ARRIS and Comcast Trial New RDK Software in Broadband Modems

September 24, 2014 America/New_York

SUWANEE, Ga., Sept. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- ARRIS Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARRS) is integrating a new, underlying open source software stack into broadband modems, in collaboration with Comcast. The software is expected to serve as a key foundation for a new version of the RDK (Reference Design Kit) for broadband devices that is currently under development.

ARRIS plans to conduct field trials with Comcast of the new ARRIS Touchstone TG1682 DOCSIS 3.0 Voice Gateways with the new software incorporated in Q4 2014; general availability is expected in Q1 2015. ARRIS was among the first technology providers to announce its RDK commitment and has been instrumental in delivering Comcast's RDK-based X1 experience to millions of consumers.

"Broadband is the gateway to all the new in-home IP entertainment and communications experiences that consumers want," said Larry Robinson, President, Customer Premises Equipment, ARRIS. "Because ARRIS is a DOCSIS leader, it is optimally positioned to most quickly introduce advanced broadband devices based on this new class of underlying software. And, as a valued, long-standing partner to Comcast's X1 experience, we're committed to ensuring our collaboration continually enhances the consumer's content and entertainment experiences."

"ARRIS is a key strategic technology partner whose innovations enable the digital experiences that millions of our subscribers enjoy," said Ken Klaer, Senior Vice President, Premises Technology, Comcast Cable. "Extending our collaboration means Comcast can continually provide the latest broadband features and functionality that are in such high demand, while innovating under the hood."

"This new broadband software development for modems and routers is based on open source code, and plays into the philosophy of the RDK to provide operators with more transparency to the code that runs their video and broadband devices," said Steve Heeb, President and General Manager of RDK Management, LLC. "The RDK was designed to accommodate multiple devices, and we expect ARRIS's efforts will strategically benefit the RDK community as we develop a plan to bring this new software into the RDK program."

SCTE 2014 attendees can learn more about ARRIS work with RDK for both video and broadband devices, and will find a number of innovative ARRIS solutions on display in booth 1764.
